Chapter 409: Chapter 409 No Need to Pretend to Get Along with Us
Tong Yao sensed something off about Wen Yun’s voice and hesitated, "Mom, did something happen?"
Wen Yun replied, "No, nothing, it’s just that we haven’t seen you in a while and your father is missing you."
That’s not right, something must’ve happened. Every time her mother says that her father is missing her, it isn’t with this tone.
Wen Yun didn’t want to elaborate over the phone, and Tong Yao didn’t press any further, "Why don’t you guys come back home earlier today, and Ahchen and I will come back after he gets off work."
"Alright then, let’s end it here." It would indeed be perfect if both their son-in-law and daughter were coming home together. It would be a good opportunity to know what exactly happened and to ask Xiaochen about Lin Fengying’s intentions.
After hanging up the phone, Tong Yao kept getting the feeling that something was wrong. She suspected that it might have something to do with Lin Fengying.
Besides Lin Fengying, she couldn’t think of any other issue that might have arisen from within the family.
Could it be that Lin Fengying went to complain to her parents?
Such scenes were not uncommon in tv dramas where the mother-in-law goes to the daughter’s parents to complain.
But... considering Lin Fengying’s nature, she didn’t seem like someone who would do such a thing, right?
Tong Yao was preoccupied with a lot on her mind that afternoon and only managed to keep her focus till four o’clock before she left for the housing area. She waited for Si Chen to get off work and they both returned to her parents’ house together.
Even though Wen Yun and Tong Yaohui were not in a good mood, knowing that their son-in-law and daughter were coming over, they still prepared the meals in advance. When they arrived, Wen Yun called them over to eat.
"Let’s eat first, we’ll talk about any matters later. The food cools quickly due to the weather."
Since she had asked them over to eat, Tong Yao and Si Chen didn’t say anything. Being preoccupied with their thoughts, all four of them didn’t eat much. After the meal, Wen Yun and Tong Yao cleared the utensils together and then cut two apples, bringing them into the living room.
When all four were seated, Wen Yun was the first to speak, "Xiaochen, did you have a fight with your mom?"
Fearing that Si Chen might not be sure about how to respond, Tong Yao quickly chimed in, "Mom, I didn’t tell you before because I didn’t want you to worry. My mother-in-law was in Kyoto and it was not a pleasant interaction that we had with her. She was taken back by my uncle. Did she come to visit you today?"
Tong Yao had initially suspected, but now hearing Wen Yun’s words, she was certain. Lin Fengying must have come to see Wen Yun.
So, they really did fight. Wen Yun kept a stern face and nodded, "Yes."
As soon as she heard this, Si Chen frowned and was about to speak when Wen Yun beat him to it.
"Xiaochen, your mom and sister have said that you never actually wanted to marry Yao Yao. You were only forced to do so because of the kindness our family has shown you. Is that the truth?"
Remembering the arrogant and domineering looks of Lin Fengying and Si Xiaohui at that time, Wen Yun felt an oppressive feeling in her chest. She added, "Xiaochen, your father and I both love you and think you are a good match. We always thought you two had good feelings for each other and that you genuinely liked Yao Yao. If you were truly forced to marry Yao Yao as your mom and sister claim, your father and I are not so naive. We have discussed it and if you two don’t have feelings for each other and want to divorce, we won’t object. There’s no need for you to maintain a superficial harmony for our sakes."
Even though they were quite satisfied with the son-in-law, they cared more for their daughter. The reason they had initiated the marriage was that they saw Lin Fengying as someone who could understand things.
If they had known Lin Fengying was this kind of person, they would never push their daughter into a problem.
After being disturbed by Lin Fengying at noon, Wen Yun started to worry for her daughter. If Si Chen was really like Si Xiaohui proclaimed, she would support her daughter’s divorce no matter what. Their family wouldn’t stand for this ill treatment.
She certainly didn’t expect Lin Fengying and Si Xiaohui to run to her parents and say such things. She had assumed they wanted to complain. Tong Yao’s face was looking not too good, she subconsciously looked at Si Chen.
Her eyes were brimming with a tiny flame, and she was ready to divorce him right away, given that he dared to utter a single word in affirmation.
Tong Yaohui didn’t utter a word. Clearly, he and Lin Fengying thought the same way. If the two children truly had no feelings for each other, as a father, he wouldn’t force his daughter to carry on.
His aim in arranging this marriage was to ensure that his daughter had a good life after they passed away. She should have someone reliable by her side.
After today’s drama, he realised that his daughter’s life as a daughter-in-law was not as easy as it seemed to be on the surface.
The roles of a mother-in-law and a sister-in-law in a family were significant. If Yao Yao had to live each day amidst fights, it would be more comfortable for her to stay with her parents.
Si Chen listened carefully to Wen Yun’s words, mixed feelings of helplessness showing in his eyes. He sincerely said, "Dad, Mom, I apologize for their visiting you. The next time they come to you, you don’t need to consider me. You can just prevent them from entering or call the police and accuse them of causing a disturbance." 𝘯𝑜𝘷𝘱𝘶𝑏.𝘤𝘰𝑚
After pausing for a few seconds, he looked at the three of them and then went on, "I didn’t marry Yao Yao out of gratitude. There are many ways to express gratitude, it’s not necessary to repay it through marriage... my decision to marry Yao Yao was because I have always loved her. I had this feeling long ago, seeing Yao Yao in school for the first time."
"Back then, I thought I wasn’t good enough for Yao Yao, so I didn’t dare to have the hope of marrying her. Until dad proposed letting me marry Yao Yao, I knew that was my only chance to be with Yao Yao. At that time, I was also worried that I couldn’t provide her with a good life, but I knew that if I missed this opportunity, there would be no more possibilities between Yao Yao and me. So, even though I knew Yao Yao might look down on me, I still wanted to give it a try."
Si Chen clearly understood why Tong Yaohui had ’forgotten’ his household register, resulting in them only having a wedding without obtaining a marriage certificate. But he was willing to take the risk.
Even if Tong Yao ultimately could not accept him and the marriage ended up becoming a joke, he would willingly accept it.
Si Chen was not someone who was good at expressing his feelings. If it were not for the current situation, he would have kept those words to himself for a lifetime.
Now, with things having escalated to this point, he didn’t mind expressing what was in his heart. He wanted to reassure Wen Yun and Tong Yaohui that his feelings for Tong Yao were genuine.
Both Wen Yun and Tong Yaohui had not expected the usually silent Si Chen to speak so much from his heart all at once. Moreover, they didn’t expect that Si Chen had fallen for Tong Yao long ago.
Despite them stating openly their understanding of the situation, thinking it through, if they ultimately find that the two children had no feelings for each other, they wouldn’t know how to handle things.
After all, marriage is not child’s play. If they ended up ruining their daughter’s marriage, as parents, they would undoubtedly hold themselves responsible.
Now, having heard all that Si Chen had to say, Wen Yun and Tong Yaohui felt relieved. As long as the children had feelings for each other, dealing with the situation would be much easier.
