Chapter 635: Chapter 638: The Things of That Year 2

After calming down, Chiyan found the two flints wrapped in Beast Skin, given to him by his father, which he was learning how to use.

He remembered how his mother often liked to have a torch lit at the entrance of the Cave at night, which he once asked the reason why.

His mother said, "So your father can see our Cave when he returns from hunting at night."

Chiyan figured he could light a torch too, so his father could locate him by the flame, couldn’t he?

Surrounded by younger cubs whimpering and starting to cry, Chiyan’s brow furrowed, "No crying! If you want to go home, listen to what I say!"

With the assistance of the cubs, Chiyan cleared an area and piled up the plucked white flowers.

Chiyan stepped forward with the flints, his heart fluttering slightly. He had never successfully lit a fire before, and wasn’t sure if he could this time.

"Crack, crack..."

The sparks from the flints fell on the white flowers, turning a patch of them visibly black.

A touch of joy spread across Chiyan’s face as he struck the flints harder. The white flowers began to smoke; finally, with a ’pop,’ a tiny flame emerged.

The eyes of the cubs lit up, immediately clapping and cheering.

"Too Good!"

"It’s on, it’s on, big brother Ayu is so amazing!"

"So beautiful!"

The cubs, chattering all at once, circled Chiyan; they had no idea of the gravity of what they had just done.

Chiyan, caught up in his own satisfaction, failed to notice the sparks that had flown from the burning white flowers and towards the surrounding flowers.

From a distance, someone suddenly shouted, "It’s terrible! The White Flower Field is on fire!"

Chiyan found the voice strangely familiar; it seemed to be his father’s. But before he could listen carefully, the cubs around him started to panic again!

The white flowers, naturally light, become even lighter once burning. A gust of wind could easily lift it high into the air.

Flames continued to fall on the surrounding blossoming white flowers; instantly igniting upon contact, a rapid spread of brilliantly flaming flowers began.

"Ah! Save us!"

Unsure which cub hollered first, but soon one dashed toward an unburned direction. Chiyan, caught off guard, let him get away!

As one started to flee, the other cubs panicked; all of them started to scatter and run towards where they believed to be safe.

With the younger Chiyan and Luyu being frightened to stillness, and Chiyan gripping them tightly, the three of them did not move from their spot.

In the blink of an eye, they were the only three cubs left from the original group of over ten.

Chiyan’s eyes began to redden; as far as he could see, the encroaching flames started to engulf the landscape. Holding Chiyan and Luyu tightly, he crouched in the vacuum area they had cleared, hardly daring to move.

Despite being in the vacuum area, the uncontrollable blaze grew near, the scorching heat relentlessly lapping at Chiyan’s back.

He was in extreme pain, but he couldn’t move. Luyu, younger than Chiyan, was softly sobbing in his arms.

But Chiyan didn’t have the strength to console her anymore. His body was on the verge of going numb from the pain, and his vision was gradually darkening.

Just before he fell, a silhouette appeared before him.

The person rushed forward to lift them and yelled out, "Found them! There are three cubs here! It’s Chiyan, Luyu and Ayu!"

Then Chiyan completely lost consciousness.
