Su Tang paused for a moment but quickly caught on and smiled, continuing along Mei Yan’s line of conversation, "If you hadn’t mentioned it, I would have never known this was edible."
Mei Yan adeptly peeled open a spiky husk, extracted the round chestnut inside, and with a gentle tap of her teeth, revealed the flesh within.
"Here, try this. It’s sweet and incredibly tasty!"
Su Tang’s hands stalled for a moment. "Is this how you guys normally eat them?"
Mei Yan nodded nonchalantly, "Yeah, how else would we eat them?"
Su Tang avoided Mei Yan’s gaze as she took the chestnut from her hand and bit into it, exclaiming loudly, "Mmm, delicious!"
Upon hearing this, Mei Yan’s smile brightened even more!
She cracked open several more spiky husks and stuffed a pile of chestnuts into Su Tang’s arms.
"There’s plenty more here, eat up if you like them!"
Su Tang: "..."
Tangtang’s heart ached, but Tangtang dared not speak.
Raw chestnuts did have their own unique appeal, but compared to the crispy, sweet taste, Su Tang preferred the soft, mushy texture they acquired after being roasted or boiled.
However, cooking them wasn’t really an option in the Silver Wolf Tribe, since, from the time Su Tang had arrived, she had not seen the likes of pots or pans.
So, she needed to figure out how to suggest that chestnuts actually tasted better when roasted.
Under the eager gazes of Mei Yan and Yuehong, Su Tang stiffened her resolve and ate five or six raw chestnuts, still having to pretend she was thinking: I’m trying this fruit for the first time, and it’s just too delicious!
Su Tang: Tired and over it.
Tired and feeling incapable of love anymore.
Therefore, when Su Tang had swallowed the sixth chestnut, she stopped Mei Yan from cracking more for her.
"I thought we were out here to forage? Why is everyone watching me eat chestnuts... I mean, fruits? Shall we go and look somewhere else?"
Mei Yan waved her hand casually, "No worries, we’ve completed our work. Now is our own time, we can do whatever we want."
Yuehong nodded in agreement, "Yeah, and there are two other Collection Teams nearby, chances are most of the things they could collect have already been picked over."
Another young female sighed, "If it weren’t for these burr fruits being tricky to collect and prone to attracting little insects, along with not having other fruits that last, they probably would have been picked clean by the Collection Team."
Su Tang nodded in realization.
Chestnuts, being a type of nut, needed to be stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
Generally, the Tribe stored food in a large Cave which, although shielded from direct sunlight, was damp and muggy.
This was a natural preservation chamber for other fruits and vegetables, but for nuts like chestnuts, it was a breeding ground for worms.
Su Tang had learned the hard way that the more one talked, the more mistakes one could make, especially since Gaiyin was not by her side, and she had to be even more careful with her words and actions.
So she extended the earlier topic with some trivial matters, "So, are we going to collect some of these burr fruits and head back?"
This question stumped both Mei Yan and Yuehong.
Both looked involuntarily towards Grandma Yayi, seemingly waiting for her to give the final command.
"Let’s check out other areas. If we don’t find anything, we’ll take some burr fruits on our way back."
Su Tang immediately nodded energetically in agreement!
She didn’t want to suffer from raw chestnuts any longer; after eating a few, she felt a bit of discomfort in her stomach.
