Chapter 247: Something Was Wrong
Rhett sounded stressed. "Listen, Isleen, you have to calm down. We still have to be careful. I don’t know if I’ve told you this before, but there’s only one way to kill the vampire."
I drew in a deep breath as I watched ’Cullen’ disappear out of sight. I couldn’t help worrying about Kylo and his relationship with him.
If he was really the vampire, then what was his ultimate goal? What did he want with me or Kylo?
"I’m trying my best to ’stay calm’ here, Rhett." I brushed my hand through my hair, as I took one final glance at Lupe’s silver dagger, feeling the cold metal of the blade.
I eventually placed it on top of my drawer, mentally promising myself to avenge Lupe.
I quickly changed my clothing to a pair of joggers and a tank top. I walked up to the mirror and tied back my hair into a bun as I anticipated the rest of whatever Rhett had to say.
"Fire." He suddenly blurted from the other end, causing me to snap my brows into a frown.
What?
Luckily, he elaborated. "That’s the only thing that can kill him. Silver probably affects him like every other vampire, but to truly kill him, we need to expose him to fire."
Oh, so we need to light up the bastard? But, how?
"Don’t bother yourself about it, though; just come here now. I’ll meet you outside the house." Rhett added softly.
There was something about his voice that made me relax. We’d last seen barely two hours ago, yet I felt rejuvenated at the thought of running into his embrace.
"I’m on my way," I muttered in reply, and with that, he hung up.
The silence around me was eerie. The dim lighting of my room didn’t help with the overwhelming feeling, and the shadows made me feel like I was being watched.
Nowhere was safe.
"You’ve got this, Isleen," I muttered reassuringly to myself before taking one final glance at my reflection in the mirror.
I quickly grabbed Lupe’s dagger and rushed out of my room. However, when I got downstairs and passed the kitchen, I paused.
Fire, eh?
I rushed into the kitchen and searched for it. Eventually, I found it. A lighter.
I placed that in my pocket as well and proceeded to rush out of the house. The bustling activities of the pack under the cover of the evening did little to ease the tension I felt.
I hadn’t gone to the Alpha’s house like... Ever. The idea was exhilarating but also unnerving.
It didn’t take me long to get close to the house on foot. And soon enough, I spotted him.
Rhett stood outside the gates, leaning on his car. But he wasn’t the only person there.
Aceco stood beside him and it seemed like they were having a conversation. The fairy healer was as gorgeous as ever, her wings fluttering gracefully behind her as she spoke.
There were no civilians close to the Alpha’s house and it didn’t take me long to figure out why.
Surrounding the fence of the house were pack soldiers, lined up in defensive formations. In fact, at different spots all around the pack on my way here, I’d noticed some pack soldiers patrolling the streets from the shadows.
While the citizens went about their daily lives unbothered, there was this feeling, this... Tension that was almost palpable in the pack. The war had reached a tipping point and everyone was on high alert.
The threat of the killer still loomed over all of us. Even though the details of Lupe’s murder were kept hidden from the public, they knew enough to be on alert.
Just then, Rhett raised his head and turned his gaze to face me. Even from that distance, even after we’d spoken on the phone and been intimate mere hours ago... My wolf still reacted to his presence.
She howled, pulling me to go to him. She didn’t need to tell me twice.
I increased my footsteps as Rhett exchanged a glance with Aceco before walking toward me. As the distance between us became smaller and smaller, my eyes began getting watery.
My emotions had begun overwhelming me again. It was all just too much to handle. Lupe was dead and on top of that, Kylo seemed to be against me. My life was unraveling before my eyes and it felt like Rhett was my only source of sanity in all of it.
"Isleen." Rhett stretched out his arms and drew me into his embrace, wrapping his arms around my body.
It was almost as if he could feel my distress. Or, maybe it was simply so obvious that I was losing it.
"I– I’m tired, Rhett," I whispered, my body wracked with sobs as I buried my face into his chest.
I didn’t even care that we were out in the open and were probably being watched by the pack soldiers.
"Shhh. It’s okay. We’re in this together." He hushed me gently, using his hands to brush my hair.
I nodded, trying to calm myself down.
This was no time to cry, Isleen! Pull yourself together.
Suddenly, a cough interrupted our little moment, forcing us to break our embrace and take our gazes to its source.
It was Aceco. She had a friendly smile on her face as she focused her gaze on me. "It’s nice seeing you again, Isleen. Though I wish the circumstances surrounding our meeting were less... Burdening." There was a hint of solemnity behind her tone.
Something was wrong.
"Did something... Did something happen?" I asked hesitantly as my eyes darted around.
Aceco and Rhett gave each other wary glances. It was as if they were pondering if they should share whatever it was they had to say with me.
I rushed to add. "It’s fine if it’s confidential. I–"
"No, it’s alright. It’s only fitting that you’re involved." Aceco gave me a reassuring smile before nodding her head towards the entrance to the Alpha’s compound. "Let’s head inside."
I nodded, wrapping my arm around Rhett’s before we waltzed toward the gate.
However, I felt something on the other side of the gate. A presence. I couldn’t be wrong about this...
