Chapter 557: Chapter 557: DVD Player
Everyone thought that the heavy rain would quickly stop. Who could have imagined that it would persist into the afternoon, showing no signs of relenting? Tong Yao looked down from the window and saw that the roads were flooded, the water reaching knee-high.
Such heavy rain was never a good sign. In her previous life, similar incidents often preceded various natural disasters. She hoped she was just overthinking.
Guo Jinnian also came to the window and noticed the unease on Tong Yao’s face. He couldn’t help but worry, "Yaoyao, what’s wrong?"
Tong Yao took a deep breath and said, "With the rain pouring down so heavily, could there be a flood?"
Guo Jinnian paused for a moment, unsure, "I don’t think so?"
Tong Yao wasn’t certain either. But judging by the time, Si Chen should be returning soon. As she was thinking this, she saw Si Chen’s figure appearing downstairs. Although it was hard to see clearly, she was sure that it was him.
Upon seeing Si Chen’s return, she felt instantly reassured. No matter what happens, as long as Si Chen was by her side, she would feel at ease. "Ahchen is back," she declared.
Guo Jinnian peered downstairs for a while but failed to recognize Si Chen amid the clutter of people under umbrellas. "Which one is Doctor Si?"
Tong Yao pointed out, "The one holding a black umbrella and a cardboard box."
Guo Jinnian was speechless. Despite scanning the crowd, he couldn’t identify which of the many people with black umbrellas was Si Chen.
Tong Yao watched as Si Chen’s figure disappeared into the building. She quickly went to the door to greet him. After waiting for a bit, Si Chen and Fu Yiheng appeared from downstairs, both carrying cardboard-wrapped items.
Seeing Tong Yao, Fu Yiheng cheerfully greeted, "Hello Tong Yao, we meet again."
Tong Yao nodded at Fu Yiheng, swiftly moved aside to make way for him, and then went to the kitchen to pour them some warm water.
Fu Yiheng placed his items on the table. Seeing Guo Jinnian, he greeted her like an old friend, "You must be here with Tong Yao, right? Dude, look what I’ve brought you."
With this, he tried to lead her towards his things by putting his arm around her shoulder, but Guo Jinnian swiftly turned, twisting his arm behind him.
"Easy, easy! It’s going to break!"
Fu Yiheng grimaced in pain.
Guo Jinnian realized that he mistook her for a boy and didn’t really intend to take advantage of her, so she didn’t give Fu Yiheng a hard time. Upon hearing his cries of pain, she released him.
Fu Yiheng rubbed his arm, "That was quite a hard grip; I didn’t provoke you, just showing you something. Why were you so aggressive?"
Guo Jinnian snorted, turning her head away. Quickly, Tong Yao explained, "Jinnian is a girl."
Fu Yiheng nearly choked on his own saliva. After examining Guo Jinnian from top to bottom and confirmed her lack of an Adam’s apple, he was exceedingly embarrassed. "I’m sorry, I didn’t know you were a girl."
Guo Jinnian was not bothered, waved her hand, and said, "It’s fine, I know you didn’t do it on purpose." 𝒏𝒐𝒗𝒑𝒖𝙗.𝒄𝒐𝒎
If Fu Yiheng had done it intentionally, by now Guo Jinnian would have broken his arm.
Fu Yiheng gulped and rubbed his arm, saying, "You sure have a strong grip."
He felt as if his arm was about to break just then. Her strength was terrifying for a woman.
Tong Yao smiled slyly and directed attention to the items on the table, asking, "What’s this?"
Si Chen placed his things on the table as well and opened the cardboard box, announcing, "It’s a video player borrowed from Yiheng."
Tong Yao’s eyes sparkled. She watched as Si Chen took a video player out of the box and was overjoyed. "Now Jinnian won’t be bored."
Si Chen looked up at Tong Yao in surprise, not expecting her to know about this since video players are not yet available domestically.
Tong Yao was too excited to notice Si Chen’s expression.
Guo Jinnian was puzzled by Tong Yao’s excitement. "Yaoyao, what is this for?" she asked.
Seeing Guo Jinnian’s curiosity, Fu Yiheng quickly responded, "This is for watching movies. Dr. Si wanted to borrow novels from me, but novels aren’t nearly as interesting as movies. So, I brought the video player over for you guys to use for a few days."
Well, he didn’t lend out his novels mainly because of their inappropriate content, harmless for him to read, but a big trouble if Si Chen gave them to Tong Yao to read, who knows what trouble he would be in if Si Chen found out?
Instead, he decided to lend them the video player for a few days!
Guo Jinnian’s interest peaked, her eyes twinkling, "It can play movies?"
"Of course, it can. Wait a bit and you will be able to watch one very soon."
Fu Yiheng started to connect the TV to the video player. While doing this, he explained how to operate the device to Guo Jinnian.
Tong Yao and Si Chen ended up as bystanders to the activity. Remembering how Fu Yiheng mistook Guo Jinnian for a boy earlier, she couldn’t help but glance at Si Chen. She thought to herself about how observant he was in recognizing Jinnian as a girl right away.
Fu Yiheng quickly set up the video player and selected a horror film for Guo Jinnian. She instantly got into watching mode, fully engaged in the movie. Fu Yiheng’s selection was a classic domestic film, which also drew in Tong Yao’s attention.
Tong Yao and Guo Jinnian sat on the couch, engrossed in the movie while Si Chen went to the kitchen to cook dinner. Fu Yiheng fetched a small stool to sit and watch alongside them, he was well-versed with the plot.
As he observed the attentiveness of two girls, he couldn’t help but give spoilers. Tong Yao and Guo Jinnian quickly shut him up. Knowing the spoilers takes away the fun of watching. They prefer to let the story unfold step by step.
Fu Yiheng felt extremely constrained. Guo Jinnian, who usually was bold, was easily frightened while watching horror movies. At the scary scenes, she covered her eyes, occasionally peeking through the cracks of her fingers. Sometimes, she even buried her head in Tong Yao’s shoulder.
Fu Yiheng watched this play out, the corner of his mouth twitched. It felt strange watching someone who behaves like a boy to make such girlish moves.
A girl with good looks trying to act like a boy, it’s a waste, he thought.
Before the movie could be finished, Si Chen called for dinner. Fu Yiheng paused the movie, "We can continue watching this in a bit."
Tong Yao and Guo Jinnian reluctantly walked to the dining table. They were still thinking about the unfinished movie, they quickly finished their meal and returned to the video player. Seeing the two engrossed in the movie, Fu Yiheng joked.
"Dr. Si, I think the video player has even more attraction for Tong Yao than you do."
Si Chen glanced at Fu but remained silent. He cleared the dishes and sat on the couch next to Tong Yao to watch the movie. Seeing as there was nothing to do at home, Fu Yiheng too sat down. It was still raining heavily outside. When he was prepared to go home, he saw that the water level outside had risen to his knees. Without a thought, he decided to stay the night.
"I’ll sleep on the couch tonight. Tomorrow, let’s go to the academy together as the rain’s too heavy. I’m worried that if I accidentally step into a manhole in the dark, no one will know."
