Chapter 566: Chapter 566: Encounter Danger 3
Guo Jinnian smirked, "I didn’t cry even when my arm was broken. Why are you crying?"
Han Enzhen, hearing this, immediately stopped her tears, "What do we do now? Will those people search for us floor by floor?"
Tong Yao looked at the intermittent flashes of light in the air and nodded, "Possibly, they should have guessed that we couldn’t have gone far. They’re likely to start searching the surrounding houses if they can’t find us around here."
Startled, Han Enzhen swallowed her saliva, "Should we hide somewhere more concealed?"
Tong Yao shook her head, "Let’s see how things pan out. The place is flooded, and entering many houses is out of question right now. Let’s just hide here! It’s safe at least for the time being. It will be better when daylight comes."
Han Enzhen had no choice but to nod obediently. Guo Jinnian seemed fine, having experienced much more. Used to handling matters alone in the past, the presence of Tong Yao now put her at ease, making her feel safe.
It might have to do with Tong Yao’s calm demeanor in the face of adversity.
Taking a deep breath, Tong Yao said softly, "Jinnian, you should rest a bit, get some sleep. I’ll stay awake. Enzhen, you should also rest."
Han Enzhen had less experience and reacted slower, so Tong Yao didn’t trust her to keep watch. Guo Jinnian needed rest due to her injuries, leaving Tong Yao to keep watch herself, which was the only way she felt secure.
Guo Jinnian was in severe pain in her arm and neck—she desperately needed to rest. She didn’t insist on staying awake and nodded, "Yaoyao, you have my thanks."
Tong Yao gently shook her head, "Don’t worry, we all have good luck. I’m sure we’ll get through this. Rest well for a while. Who knows, Ahchen might have found us by the time you wake up. He must be looking for us at this moment."
Si Chen wouldn’t be at peace until he found her. Hence, Tong Yao was sure Si Chen was still searching for them; he just hadn’t found them yet.
Upon hearing this, Guo Jinnian felt reassured. Si Chen indeed seemed reliable. He could possibly locate them before daybreak.
Han Enzhen, out of curiosity, asked, "Yaoyao, who’s Ahchen? You’ve mentioned him several times, he seems impressive."
Tong Yao said softly, "He’s my husband."
Han Enzhen was surprised but quickly remembered that Tong Yao was pregnant. Being pregnant meant that she was already married; she merely overlooked this point and forgot to think about it.
It just never occurred to her that Tong Yao, being so young, was already married.
The rooftop wind was quite strong. Their clothes, which had just about dried, were wet again from the water, and they felt cold under the wind. She shivered, hugging her arms, "It’s so cold!"
Tong Yao said gently, "Both of you sit together, Jinnian, it’ll be warmer. Just make sure not to touch her injured arm."
Han Enzhen nodded. When she saw that Guo Jinnian had no objections, she sat down close to her. The balcony wind was strong and gave her goosebumps. Glancing at Tong Yao’s tank top, she figured Tong Yao must be feeling cold too. It was a pity she didn’t have a jacket; otherwise, she would have surely given it to Tong Yao.
After comforting the two, Tong Yao slowly walked towards the edge of the wall. Seeing a flashlight swinging back and forth downstairs, she knew the people were still searching for them. She just didn’t know how long it would take.
Just as Tong Yao was worrying, she noticed another light from not too far away. It also seemed to be searching for someone. She wasn’t sure if they were part of the same group and didn’t dare to make a sound. She could only watch the two beams of light unite, shortly after which one moved east while the other headed west.
She slouched against the wall, not daring to expose too much, fearing being noticed by the people downstairs. They had flashlights, and she didn’t know if they would suddenly shine them towards the rooftop like before.
*
At that moment, Si Chen and Fu Yiheng had just passed by two sturdy foreigners downstairs. Fu Yiheng was somewhat curious, "Dr. Si, these people seem to be looking for someone too. Why didn’t you ask them for information? They might know some clues."
After saying this, he noticed the chilling expression on Si Chen’s face. Si Chen usually appeared quite refined and thoughtful, and this change in demeanor made him a little uncomfortable.
Si Chen glanced back at the foreigners who were getting further and further away and asked in a stern voice, "Who do you think they’re looking for in the middle of the night?"
Fu Yiheng found Si Chen’s question a bit funny, "How would I know? I don’t know them."
As soon as he finished talking, it seemed he realized something and exclaimed, "You don’t suspect that they’re looking for Tong Yao and Guo Jinnian, do you?"
This assumption seemed far-fetched to him. However, thinking about it, those two looked quite menacing and didn’t seem friendly at all. They might indeed be villains.
Si Chen narrowed his eyes and advised, "Can’t be sure, but we could follow them and might find some clues."
When he finished speaking, Si Chen turned off his flashlight. Fu Yiheng shivered, and heard Si Chen say, "If they’re looking for Yaoyao, she might be nearby."
Fu Yiheng thought Si Chen’s reasoning made sense. The people on the bridge said they saw Tong Yao nearby. However, despite their lengthy search, they hadn’t found anyone yet. They also encountered these two men who were looking for someone. If they were indeed searching for Tong Yao, it wasn’t implausible.
This country had many maniacs, especially those who were fond of Chinese women. In such a situation, if these people selected Tong Yao as their target, gathering any evidence would be as difficult as climbing to heaven. Tong Yao and Guo Jinnian’s disappearance might become a cold case.
They had to find these two as quickly as possible.
As soon as the thought entered his head, he noticed Si Chen slowly moving towards the light of the flashlight. The darkness of the night made the flashlight beam extremely noticeable.
Both of them maintained a safe distance and noticed that after failing to find anyone after circling the streets a few times, the foreigners began attempting to open a door, seemingly intending to search inside the houses.
Fu Yiheng became more convinced that these two were up to no good. They might indeed be looking for Tong Yao and Guo Jinnian. Despite searching so long with Si Chen, they hadn’t found anyone yet and didn’t know where else to look. Following these two men might lead them to some clues.
It was Fu Yiheng’s first time encountering such a situation. Although he was scared, he also found it thrilling, even more so than watching a horror movie.
The foreigners began to explore every open house on the left. Fu Yiheng became more certain each time—they were definitely up to no good.
On the rooftop, Tong Yao saw the flashlight downstairs suddenly disappear, her heart sinking further. She continued to watch the downstairs situation carefully. Seeing that another flashlight then emerged from the rooftop and subsequently disappeared downstairs, she felt her heart rising into her throat.
It was apparent that they were inspecting the floors where the doors could be opened. Going on like this, they would reach their location within an hour.
